The unity candle ceremony is a modern wedding tradition that beautifully symbolizes the joining of two lives into one. While its exact origins are relatively recent—becoming popular in the United States during the latter half of the twentieth century—it has become a cherished addition to both religious and non-religious ceremonies. Couples often choose the unity candle because of its simplicity, elegance, and deep symbolism of shared love and partnership.

During the ritual, two taper candles are lit, often by family members or by the couple themselves, to represent the individual lives and families of the bride and groom. Together, the couple then uses the flames of these candles to light a single larger pillar candle—the unity candle. This act represents the blending of their individual lives, hopes, and dreams into one shared journey. The smaller candles remain lit, signifying that while the couple becomes one, they also maintain their individuality within the partnership.

For this ceremony, a white unity candle will be used. White traditionally symbolizes purity, peace, and the beginning of a new chapter, making it a meaningful choice for this moment of union. As the flame is shared and the central candle glows, it creates a lasting reminder of the love that now burns brightly between two hearts joined together.
